Breda University of Applied Sciences has the longest history (since 1966) in tourism and leisure education of all universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, and consequently, an extensive international network in the field. BUas offers professional and academic bachelor’s and master’s programmes and also an associate degree programme.

Management bachelor's programme at Breda University of Applied Sciences, you choose so much more than that!

Unlimited opportunities with a degree in tourism
Exotic destinations, beaches and palm trees. If you choose the Tourism

Tourism is still one of the fastest-growing industries worldwide, and in terms of jobs it offers literally unlimited opportunities. ‘Many of our students choose to study tourism because they love travelling. Very quickly they find out that the field involves much more than organising and selling holidays.’

Charting a course
Marieke Hommelberg works in the placement office of the Academy for Tourism and is busy every day helping students find placements. In her eyes, a good placement is ‘an assignment or position that matches the student’s learning goals and the needs of the placement host company, but above all one that helps the student chart a course to a job that matters!’

‘Such a job could be a position in a sales or marketing department of a travel organisation, like TUI or Sunweb, but there are also other positions you might not immediately think of,’ says Marieke.  ‘For example, city marketeer, which involves putting a destination on the map. NBTC (Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions) does that for the ‘Holland’ brand. Or just think of Breda Marketing or Visit Valencia. Creating apps is also an option, if that is where your interest lies; a city walk in Rotterdam, a‘Check the Queue Times’ app for an airport or for a theme park like De Efteling - these are the kinds of things you learn in our E-lab.’

Boost
‘During the Covid pandemic, people started focusing more on destinations closer to home and on day trips,’ Marieke continues. ‘This has boosted domestic tourism, and it makes the job market even more interesting. Jobs at day-trip and overnight recreation facilities, park managers at Landal Greenparks and other resorts, the development of greener destinations, such as Natuurhuisje.nl. People are now thinking more consciously about travelling, which is covered in the course modules on consumer behaviour and sustainability.

Creativity in solutions
‘Sustainability in tourism is a major challenge for our future professionals. As a policy officer with an organisation or the government you can contribute ideas towards solutions. How can you prevent over-tourism by better spreading tourism across locations and seasons? Rethinking is badly needed in this sector. In our new Aviation Management specialisation, students will soon be working on a future-proof aviation industry. Flexibility, creativity in solutions - that is important.’
Learning entrepreneurship
‘You also have to be entrepreneurial, and I don’t just mean having a passion for travel. You learn entrepreneurship with us, you study revenue models, financial management and efficient business operations. You study new concepts such as GoBoony, the Airbnb of campervans and motorhomes. Entrepreneurial students can graduate with an idea for their own business, BUas Startup Support helps them with that. With creativity and perseverance, the opportunities in tourism are unlimited!’
