Studenten uit Caribisch Nederland veilig in Nederland aangekomen
Maandagochtend om 7 uur Nederlandse tijd zijn 35 van de in totaal 97 studenten uit Caribisch Nederland veilig op Schiphol geland. Deze groep, die ervoor gekozen heeft om zich te laten begeleiden, werd op de luchthaven opgevangen door vertegenwoordigers van St. Maarten Student Support Services (S4). Van de 35 studenten die onder begeleiding reisden, zijn er 24 afkomstig van Bonaire, acht van Sint Eustatius en drie van Saba. De overige 62 reizen op eigen gelegenheid naar Nederland.
De studenten werden per bus vervoerd naar Hotel Schiphol A4, waar ze hun S4 mentor ontmoetten, meer informatie en de polis van hun ziektekostenverzekering ontvingen, een bankrekening konden openen en in sommige gevallen het huurcontract voor de studentenkamer konden ondertekenen. Ook ontving iedere student een SIM-card om via mobiele telefoon contact met het thuisfront te kunnen onderhouden. Aansluitend was er een welkomstceremonie met een maaltijdbuffet, waarna de studenten per bus naar hun nieuwe woonplaats werden gebracht. Op dinsdag 31 juli begint in de verschillende studentensteden de opvangweek, waarin het opvangcomité van S4 diverse activiteiten heeft georganiseerd. De nieuwkomers worden onder meer begeleid voor wat betreft hun inschrijving in de gemeente waar zij gaan wonen en wegwijs gemaakt in de stad, reizen met het openbaar vervoer en het inrichten van hun kamer. Daarnaast worden ze geholpen bij het controleren van hun inschrijving bij de onderwijsinstelling van hun keuze en maken ze ook kennis met de Nederlandse cultuur.
Naast de 97 studenten die kozen voor een vervolgopleiding in Nederland, gaan er vrij veel studenten studeren in de VS en de regio. Op dit moment gaat het om ruim honderd studenten, waarvan er minstens vijftig op Curaçao gaan studeren.
Students from the Dutch Caribbean arrived safely in The Netherlands
Monday morning at 7 AM Dutch time 35 of the total of 97 students from the Dutch Caribbean landed safely at Schiphol Airport. This group, who chose to travel accompanied, was welcomed at the airport by representatives of St. Maarten Student Support Services (S4). Of the 35 students, who travelled accompanied, are 24 from Bonaire, 8 from St. Eustatius and 3 from Saba. The other 62 students are travelling to the Netherlands on their own .
The students went by bus to Hotel Schiphol A4, where they met their S4 mentor. They received more information and the papers of their health insurance. They could open a bank account and in some cases the lease contract for the student room could be signed. Each student also received a SIM card for mobile phone to maintain contact with their family at home. After that there was a welcoming ceremony with a buffet dinner, after which the students went to their new home town by bus. On Tuesday, July 31th the reception weeks start in the various cities. S4 has organized various activities. The newcomers are assisted with their registration in the municipality where they are going to live and familiarized with the city, traveling by public transport and setting up their room. They are also helped to check their enrollment at the educational institution of their choice and they get acquainted with the Dutch culture.
Besides the 97 students who opted for further education in The Netherlands, a lot of students choose to study in the U.S. and the region. At this moment more than one hundred students, of which at least fifty are going to study on Curaçao.
